Labour Degree: Institute matriculates 84 students

The Michael Imoudu National Institute of Labour Studies (MINILS) has matriculated 84 students for its BSc programme in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Degree programme is affiliated with the University of Ilorin (Unilorin).

Mr Issa Aremu, the Director-General of MINILS, explained during the Matriculation Ceremony of the 2022/2023 Academic session on Friday, that the institute felt the need to diversify and introduce Diplomas and Degree courses.

According to him, historically the institute runs regular courses and special in-plant courses for workers on Labour studies on building industrial harmony and fairness in the world of works.

He explained further that these courses expose workers and participants to get more rigorous learning on theories and practices of labour studies.

He described the matriculation as “a maiden historic event for the institute”, while reiterating the resolve of MINILS to promote education in line with the SDG Goal-4.

The director-general stated that the goal ensures inclusive and equitable, quality education that promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

He expressed optimism on the partnership with the Unilorin, while describing the institution as having stable academic session.

“The programme will ensure that students get the knowledge required for handling Labour issues, mediation and conciliation.

“Nothing justifies a situation where workers embark on indefinite strike and disrupt education of the youths of the nation,” he said.

He also added that the initiative is in line with the 8-point Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which lay emphasis on education as important for the development of the nation.

Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice Chancellor of the Unilorin, admonished the students on character and learning, adding that this is the moto of the university which is instilled on all students.

Egbewole, who was represented by Prof. Ahmad Abdulsalam, the Unilorin Director of Centre for Affiliated Institutions, also urged the students to abide by the rules and regulations of the institute.

He emphasised the need for the students to show commitment and work hard in order to excel, adding that there is entitlement for those who excel.

According to him, Unilorin is cult free and drug free, and enjoined them to imbibe such character.

Egbewole also called on the Federal Government to establish a university dedicated to Labour Studies in Nigeria.

Earlier, Dr Sylvanus Adamade, the Programme Coordinator, explained that the matriculation is the official recognition of students who commenced academic session in the institute.

He commended the director-eneral for committing resources for the commencement of the programme, while charging the students on commitment to serious academic work. (NAN)
