Just In: Explosion Rocks Anambra As Many Escape Death

In what could have been a mass burial in Anambra, many people escaped death yesterday when a tanker fully loaded with diesel exploded and sparked fire along old Enugu-Onitsha road.

The accident happened in front of Ogbunike High School and Residency hotel Ogidi.

The tanker driver, his boy, other vehicles, passersby and security staff of the hotel escaped unhurt.

Eye witnesses told newsmen that the tanker suddenly lost control, veered off the road and rammed at the hotel wall and sparked fire prompting the driver, the motor boy and everybody around the vicinity to scamper for safety.

As there was no inflammatory structures close to the tanker passers-by were able to stop other vehicles from getting close to prevent the fire from spreading, the eyewitness said.

According to him the staff of the hotel and private motorists quickly alerted the fire service and the firemen responded quick enough to quench the inferno eliciting spontaneous jubilation from onlookers.

In his reaction the chairman Residency Hotel High Chief Engr. Emeka Ken Nwabueze, who holds the title of ‘Ajie Okpala Ogidi’ thanked God for saving the situation.

High Chief Nwabueze who nearly lost his breath while the scene unfolded said: “God is good to his people all the time. The incident that happened with the diesel tanker that fell and caught fire in front of Residency Hotel (Leophine), Ogidi, Anambra State affected only the wall with no record of death or injury.

“God in his mercies sent down the rain that quenched the fire and through the efforts put up by fire service operatives.”

Almost immediately, he mobilized workers to restore the wall and everything returned to normal.
