By Julie Sylvia, Onitsha
The Head of Local Government Administration, HLGA, in Onitsha South council area, Mr Victor Orji and staffs have commended the Mayor of the council, Hon.Chief Emeka Orji for the procurement, installation and subsequent electrification of the Council Secretariat.
Orji who gave the commendation on behalf of the workers after the installation lamented that since he was transfered to Onitsha South LG on May, 2024, it was only generating set or solar light which is epileptic that they have been using.
“The workers were not happy that there was no light, even I, personally, I am not happy. On Inquiry, I learnt that there was a transformer abandoned by the previous administration which was vandalized. I told the chairman the need to connect to national grid, but as God may have it, the Chairman has sourced for a transformer.
“The Chairman is doing his best with the meagre resources given to the local government, we paid a lot of money for the transformer, the workers would celebrate it like christmas, they would celebrate it as the autonomy of Local government was celebrated.
“I don’t stay in the office because there was no light, I treat my files in my car, even the chairman atimes runs out of his office to the Secretariat hall, likewise other staffs and is not even easy running generator with the high cost of gas.
“I don’t know how much we are getting to be spending this much but I thank the chairman for taking a better step by connecting to the national grid. The stress of the workers will be reduced now, they can now charge their phones in their offices, enjoy fan.
“If you come to most local governments in the state, they cannot afford to connect to the national grid, I thank God for the little resources given to local governments, most of them will now connect to national grid, so that it will look as if one comes into government establishment,” he stated.
In her contribution , Mrs Regina Okoro, a worker, commended the Mayor for the light, stating that he is a solution to the challenges the workers are facing in the council, recalling that he bought more than 100 plastic chairs packed in the hall for activities both for the workers and other workers welfare provisions.
Expressing his joy, Mr Paul Akubu stated that he is still seeing the entire thing as a dream, as he never thought of seeing light at the Secretariat so soon but lauded the Council Mayor for developing the council Secretariat to the next level.
He noted that the Mayor German floored the Secretariat compound, ensured that trees and flowers were planted at the Secretariat compound, with steady water supply.
He also urged him not to relent in his efforts to better the condition of the people adding that God will reward him abundantly.
In his response the Mayor disclosed that there was no power supply in the Secretariat for the past 18 years to 20 years, stating that none of the previous administrations have used EEDC since the Council Secretariat was relocated from Ziks Avenue to Ihembosi Street.
