Journalists should investigate more in order to balance our society – NUJ Chairman, Odogwu

Chairman, Anambra state Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu has called on journalists in the state to add more investigation and fearlessness in their reportage as a way to correct the social ills that prevail in today’s society.

The Anambra NUJ Chairman, Odogwu made the call during the last congress of the union for the year, 2022, held at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Center Awka, NUJ secretariat Awka.

Dr Odogwu while pointing out that for the society to be prosperous and habitable for all, that journalists must be bold and fearless to fight against evil with their reportage, encouraged journalists in the state to rise to the occasion for the interest of all.

The Anambra NUJ Chairman who expressed happiness for the love and unity amongst members of the union, commended them for their cooperation and commitment to the duty as the watchdogs of the society, and prayed for a fruitful 2023 for the union and its members.

“Journalists in the state are doing very well, and I pray that they will continue to do well. But I want them to add more investigation and fearlessness in their reportage next year because any journalism work that is not piercing on anybody is not journalism work but a PR material. Journalists are not known for PR material. Journalists should be Journalists and do the work for the betterment of the society “, he said.

A Guest speaker at the event and the Young Progressives Party, YPP Candidate for for Awka North and South Federal House of Representatives in the forthcoming elections, Chief Kingsley Uyammadu commended journalists on their efforts towards bettering the society, describing them as the only hope for the society, as according to him, Nigerian government has failed the people.

Chief Uyammadu, a manufacturer, and international businessman while regretting the present situation of Nigeria which he said is caused by election of incompetent leaders into leadership positions by the populace, warned Ndi Anambra and entire Nigerians against making the same mistake in the next years election, as according to him, the people should be able to vote for credible candidates who will represent them creditably in any of the political positions.

The YPP Awka North and South Federal House of Representatives flag bearer , Uyammadu assured to redefine politics and transform Awka North and South if he will be voted in to represent the people.

He listed establishment of a free trade zone, vocational centres, improve agriculture, healthcare services, and education sector, as some of his targets for the constituency.

“One of the ways to improve the economy of the community is to encourage and support those who invest in the community. How better to do this than to make the selling of their goods easy and efficient. As your legislator, my main focus will be to create the enabling environment needed to boost sales and production in Awka North and South. We will give maximum priority to agriculture. We shall work to secure genetically modified cash crops that when down, will multiply harvest. We will ensure that our Primary Health Centres are the pride of our communities. And we will vigorously pursue the increment of the budgetary allocation to education to meet the internationally recommended 25%.”, he noted.

Chief Uyammadu further enumerated sports development, women and youths empowerment, as areas to also focus if elected.

He promised to pursue a bill that will ensure ease of doing business in Nigeria, as according to him, businesses in Nigeria are suffering as a result of some anti business laws that prevails in the country.

“The major problem Nigeria is facing in business sector is issue of constant change of business laws in the country. Each president reviews and utters business laws at will unlike in developed countries where a business law can be untouched for over fifty years, thereby encouraging investors to come in and invest without fear of change of business law in the country within a short while. If elected, I will pursue a bill that will encourage business”, he said.

Chief Uyammadu claimed that it is the turn of Awka North to represent the constituency at the green chamber, as according to him Awka North has just represented the the constituency at the Federal House of Representatives once since the year 1999 till date.

” Since the year 1999, it has been Awka South that has been representing the constituency, as it was only once that someone from Awka North represented since that time till now. I think it is now an injustice, so now it is the turn of Awka North. And if you come to Awka North, I am the only one that is vying for this position”, he disclosed.

The event gave members of the union the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions on how the union will continue to wax stronger.

Contributing, an Ugbene High Chief, Ozo Emetumba Afudike, a UN Ambassador,Chief Onwelukwue Aaron Chukwukadibia thanked the NUJ members led by Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu PhD for taking the union to heights unprecedented since assuming office early this year,even as he urged him not to relent. He commmeded the passion, and love for Awka North exhibited by Hon Uyammadu throughout his campaigns, praying he wins as his type would be a true representative of Ndi Awka North, Awka South , Anambra Central and the state at large .
