As the world marks the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16, attention is drawn to the importance of collective action to protect the atmosphere and promote a sustainable future.

In Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has continued to advance initiatives that promote sustainability, responsible use of natural resources and healthier communities.

A major component of the administration’s approach is its tree-planting and urban greening campaign, including the One House, Two Trees initiative and the policy requiring green spaces in new developments.

The administration has also promoted the “Cut-One, Plant-Three” initiative, encouraging the replacement of trees removed for construction or other purposes and strengthening the state’s vegetation cover.

As part of activities marking Anambra’s 35th anniversary, Governor Soludo personally led a symbolic tree-planting exercise on August 27 this year, under the theme, “Our Environment, Our Future, A Call for Collective Action.”

Beyond tree planting, the administration has intensified waste management, drainage maintenance, flood prevention and efforts to curb indiscriminate dumping and other practices that degrade communities.

The government has also strengthened measures against erosion, uncontrolled sand mining and other activities capable of damaging natural ecosystems, while promoting greater compliance with established regulations.

These initiatives contribute to the broader global effort to build resilient communities and reduce practices that place pressure on the planet, complementing international action to preserve the ozone layer.

As the world marks the observance, Anambra’s sustainability drive demonstrates the importance of translating global concerns into practical actions that protect communities and secure a healthier future.

For Governor Soludo, the objective is to make responsible stewardship of the state’s natural resources a shared responsibility, while creating an Anambra where sustainable development remains central to the wellbeing of present and future generations.
