GSS offers scholarship to 20 students

Government Secondary School, Owerri on Thursday awarded scholarship to 20 students of the school, in conjunction with its 1986 Alumni Association.


In a speech at the event, the Chairman of the association, Mr Onyewuchi Okere, said the award was designed to sustain the school’s tradition of academic excellence.
He also said the gesture was to motivate the young generation of students to begin to prepare for the challenges ahead.


Okere, an engineer, urged the Federal Government to pay priority attention to education.
He called for synergy between public and private sectors in the effort to enhance investment in the nation’s education sector.
He described education as the engine of growth of all nations.

“Education not only opens a person’s mind to endless possibilities but stimulates productive thought processes needed for the development of a nation.
Okere said the world had evolved through education, adding that it remains the best legacy any nation can pass to its future generation.
“Education thrives on set principles and theories that are proven and steady progress in the field of education through research and application of theories leads to inventions and innovations.
“As we reflect on our history as a nation, we must prioritise education for optimal result,” Okere said.


Also, the Publicity Secretary of the Scholarship Committee, Mr Emeka Mba, said the fundamental objective of the initiative was to create a pool of talents equipped with industry-relevant skills.
Mba further said the initiative formed part of a post-secondary education mentorship programme of the association, tagged “adopt a mentee”.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr Gerald Nwakama, said the scholarship was offered on merit and would help to harness talents for future innovations in Nigeria.
He further said the scheme seeks to promote social inclusion, recognising ability in disability amongst the visually-impaired students, and reward for professional excellence on the part of female teachers.


One of the beneficiaries, Vincent Kaonyeuloaso, a JSS2 student, thanked the association for the award and promised not to backslide in his studies in order to excel. (NAN)
