Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has condemned the brutal killing of at least 40 farmers and fishermen in Dumba, Kukawa Local Government Area, by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, January 12, 2025, also left many missing. Governor Zulum expressed profound grief, stating, “With deep sorrow, I received the tragic news of the attack on Dumba, where terrorists killed scores of our farmers and fishermen.” His statement, signed by Prof. Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, urged the military to intensify efforts under Operation Hadin Kai to eliminate insurgents in the Lake Chad region. The victims were reportedly targeted while operating outside designated security zones for farming and fishing. These cleared areas remain vulnerable to attacks and potential landmines. The governor emphasized the importance of citizens adhering to safety guidelines by staying within demarcated safe zones established by the government and security agencies. “We urge our people to avoid unsafe areas and allow the military to focus on clearing zones still under terrorist threat,” Governor Zulum said. He called for decisive military action to bring the perpetrators to justice and assured the public of a thorough investigation into the attack. Governor Zulum praised the armed forces for their ongoing efforts to secure land for resettlement and agricultural activities, critical to addressing internal displacement. He also urged communities to report suspicious activities to security forces to prevent further tragedies.
