Anambra Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has been urged to consider appointment of more women in his cabinet to meet the gender balance.

The call was made by a former Anambra Governorship aspirant on the platform of defunct, Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), Hon. Oby Kate Okafor.

According to the veteran Nollywood actress and politician, Soludo’s cabinet fell short of expectation for not meeting the gender balance ratio of 70:30.

“The women did not make up to 30 percent of the entire cabinet now working with Soludo in Anambra. And that is not what we expected from a seasoned development expert like Soludo.

” I have listened to him several times talk glowingly about the huge role that women can play in the development of Igbo society. I expected him to have taken a cue from his lectures by appointing more women into his cabinet. But that didn’t happen.

Okafor was also critical of the composition of Soludo’s aides so far, for excluding women. “Even the special advisers or assistants he has appointed so far, how many women made it?Does it mean, we don’t have capable women to work with Soludo? No. Certainly we need more women in the Soludo led government.

She argued that Soludo’s emergence wouldn’t have been possible if not for the massive support he received from the Anambra women electorates.

“Men were in the beer parlors drinking beer or hotel enjoying themselves while the women were at the pooling booths voting on the election day. They spent the whole day at the voting centers and even followed the ballot boxes to the collation center to ensure their votes truly count. But they are now sidelined when it comes to appointment. This is where i am not happy with Soludo”, she stressed.

Okafor, who was a Deputy chairman, Anambra State chapter of the Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC), when a coalition of 50 political parties publicly backed Soludo’s governorship bid, also disclosed that the group was yet to be rewarded for their efforts.

“IPAC played key role in Soludo’s victory at last Governorship election but he is yet to acknowledge our efforts. We were about 50 political parties that organized a press conference under the banner of IPAC where we mandated our members to vote massively for Soludo. I contested the election under the platform of ACD but when INEC later deregistered our parties, I decided to team up with AGPA to work for Soludo’s victory.

“We expected him to have acknowledged our sacrifice and even thank us for supporting him, atleast to give us sense of belonging. It’s not right to abandon us after the election. Other parties like APC and PDP were calling us then but we decided to go with APGA and Soludo”, she adds.
