Full house as 23 Super Eagles train in Asaba

The Asaba camp of the Super Eagles came alive on Tuesday as all the invited players were involved in first training session ahead of their African Cup of Nations qualifier against the Pirates of Seychelles at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Friday.

Only eight players joined the camp on Monday but by noon on Tuesday the number had swelled to 18. However, Hapoel Beer Sheva’s John Ogu, Stoke City’s Oghenekaro Etebo, Anorthosis Famagusta goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, Wolfsburg loanee Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray star Henry Onyekuru joined the group before their first full training.

Our correspondent lerarnt that the session initiatly slated to start at 4pm was shifted forward by 30 minutes.

“Ahead of the #AFCON2019Q vs Seychelles, we will be having our first training session at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba at 4pm today (yesterday), Tuesday, March 19, 2019. It will be an open session,” the team had announced on its official Twitter handle.

The Super Eagles players are scheduled to have a minimum of three training sessions before stepping out onto the Stephen Keshi Stadium turf for the AFCON qualifier against the Pirates on Friday.

There are worries over two of the players and coach Rohr specifically monitored Akwa United’s Ndifreke Effiong and Brighton’s Leon Balogun in yesterday’s first session on grass as there were question marks surrounding their fitness.

Effiong sustained a knee injury last weekend in a Nigeria Professional Football League clash while the central defender has been inactive since February 6 due to a shoulder injury.
