A federal judge has sentenced former US Senator Bob Menendez to 11 years in prison after his conviction on corruption charges, including bribery, extortion, and obstruction of justice. Menendez, a 71-year-old Democrat from New Jersey, was found guilty of accepting bribes to benefit businessmen with ties to Egypt and Qatar. The case gained national attention after authorities discovered gold bars and nearly $500,000 in cash hidden in his home. During sentencing, District Judge Sidney Stein criticized Menendez, stating, “Somewhere along the way… you lost your way. Working for the public good became working for your good.” Menendez, who previously chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has vowed to appeal the ruling, calling his prosecution a “witch hunt.” He was convicted alongside two businessmen, while his wife, Nadine Menendez, faces separate charges. Prosecutors had pushed for a 15-year sentence, citing an “egregious abuse of power,” while the defense sought no more than eight years.
