Flood menace: Odekpe PG seeks FG, Soludo’s intervention

President general of Odekpe Community in Ogbaru local government area, Anambra state, Innocent Nwanosike, has called on the State and Federal Government to come to their aid following flood menace ravaging the community in recent times.
Nwanosike made the call on Monday during an interview with newsmen in Odekpe,Ogbaru.
He decried the reoccurrence of the heavy flooding in the area after similar experience in 2012, noting that government needs to come to their aid now to save lives of the people who have become annual victims of the flood.
“This type of incident happened in 2012, same incident has reoccurred again and this time around, Ogbaru local government area is in trouble. The council area, as a whole, is submerged with flood water. We need government’s before it is too late.”
Speaking further, he said ” All the residential areas have been submerged by water. People are already displaced and properties have been broight outside to the main road. We are pleading with government to rescue us before it is too late. Some Children who could not swim were being dragged out,” he lamented.
The legal Practitioner however stated that government should as well come to their rescue with palliatives, pointing that the community members are faced with hunger as all their crops were submerged by the raging flood.
“People are helpless and homeless because crops are submerged by water and not yet matured to be harvested. We are dying of hunger.
“Government should also deploy Ministry for works and environment to come and check culverts which are connected to River Niger. The culverts that was built connecting to the River Niger to prevent water coming outside have all damaged”
The Community leader commended the courage of Archbishop Valerian Okeke who he said visited St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Odekpe without minding the terrible nature of the area, describing the Archbishop as a real good Shepard that Cares for his flock.
