The Federal Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched the Rural Emergency Service and Maternal Transportation (RESMAT) initiative aimed at saving 1.7 million pregnant women in rural areas from maternal deaths. Set to begin in January 2025, the program will provide emergency medical services and transportation to pregnant women and children in 15 states with high mortality rates. The initiative includes the provision of ambulances for timely access to healthcare. Experts emphasize the urgency of the program, given Nigeria’s high maternal and infant mortality rates, especially in rural areas.
