The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and its partners, has launched five mini-LNG plants aimed at transforming Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and expanding domestic gas utilization. The facilities—PRIME LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete—will be built on a 33,000-hectare site with a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. The $500 million investment is expected to provide cleaner energy solutions to underserved regions, drive economic diversification, and support local industries. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the project as a testament to the government’s commitment to maximizing Nigeria’s vast gas resources under the ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative. He expressed confidence in NNPC Ltd.’s ability to deliver the project on schedule, noting that the state government had pledged adequate security to facilitate its execution. “Natural gas is a key driver for industrialization, economic growth, and Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy. I commend NNPC Ltd. and its partners for achieving this milestone and look forward to a smooth and safe project delivery,” Ekpo said. NNPC Ltd.’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, highlighted the project’s strategic location and its potential to deliver cost-effective, long-term gas solutions to industrial and commercial customers, particularly in the northern region. He reiterated the company’s commitment to reducing reliance on polluting fuels through domestic gas utilization. Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, hailed the project as a major step towards economic prosperity and energy security, aligning with global efforts to combat carbon emissions. “This $500 million investment sets the stage for a cleaner and more prosperous future. We will ensure that both the investment and investors are protected,” he assured. Also speaking, Senate Committee on Local Content Chairperson, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, applauded President Bola Tinubu for signing the executive order that enabled the establishment of the plant. She described gas as the future of Nigeria’s energy sector and expressed optimism about the completion of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project by the second quarter of 2025. With this initiative, Nigeria moves closer to harnessing its abundant gas reserves, supporting industrial growth, and reducing its carbon footprint, in line with global energy transition goals.
