Farmer jailed 2 months for stealing colleague’s tomatoes

A Grade I Area Court, Kabusa, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 20-year-old farmer, Kire Musa  to two months imprisonment for stealing for harvesting and stealing a colleague’s tomatoes.

Musa, who resides in Kabusa village Abuja, pleaded guilty to theft and begged for leniency.

The Judge, Malam Abubakar Sadiq, gave Musa an option to pay a fine of N10,000  and warned him to be a law abiding citizen .

Sadiq ordered the convict to pay N20,000 in damages to the complainant or serve two months imprisonment in lieu of the compensation

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Stanley Nwafoaku told the court that the complainant, Haruna Hassan of the same address reported the matter at the Kabusa Police Station on Oct. 10.

Nwafoaku informed the court that on Oct. 9 at about noon, the convict trespassed into the  complainant’s tomato farm located in Kabusa and stole tomatoes worth N20,000.

He said the complainant confessed it was not the first time the convict will dishonestly go to his farm to steal.

He said that during police interrogation and investigation, the convict confessed to the crime but all effort made to recover the tomatoes failed.

The offence, the prosecution said, contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
