Ex-lawmaker says Anambra LG election a sham
Lawrence Nwimo, Awka
Former lawmaker representing Njikoka constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. George Ike Okonkwo, has described the recent local government council elections in the state as a sham.
In a statement issued on Sunday and made available to journalists in Awka, Hon. Okonkwo stated that the mandates enjoyed by the purported winners of the last elections were not derived from the people.
He stated that the charade called elections must be canceled and credible elections conducted, or there would be consequences.
The statement reads: “First and foremost, your names were not duly submitted by the National Chairman of APGA. I don’t understand what is so difficult in grasping the principle that ‘Your Rights and Authority stop where mine begin.’ This attitude of blatantly disobeying constitutional due process leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
“Secondly, you have shown a lack of willingness to test your popularity in free polls ahead of the Anambra gubernatorial election in November next year. That is why you sent polling staff to all the units without result sheets.
“Let me remind you: ‘Sovereignty belongs to the people, from whom, through this Constitution, Government derives all its powers and authority.’ You have therefore stolen the mandates you pretend to hold, as they did not validly emanate from the people and are bereft of moral authority. What a shame.
“Of course, you are free to use tactics to remain in office, a decision you will regret by November 2025. Anambra has the most sophisticated electorate in Nigeria, and for that reason, we remain the main laboratory of Nigeria’s politics.”
