EndSARS: Civil Society Back Gov. Obiano’s Interventions

Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET) a platform for Citizens’ stakeholders and Non State Actors, have given their full backing to recent #EndSARS remedial interventions by Anambra State Governor, Chief (Sir) Willie Obiano.

In a special release, the Chairman of the group, Prince Chris Azor who is also a member of the newly inaugurated State Judicial Panel of Inquiry said, the Governor has demonstrated uncommon leadership throughout the period of #EndSARS peaceful demonstrations in the country.

The Governor, had earlier addressed the #EndSARS protesters, and acceded to their demands by relieving the former OC SARS in Awkuzu, of his political appointment and recommended his immediate prosecution. The people oriented Governor also, promised to tour detention facilities and effect release of all illegal detainees in various defunct SARS formations in the state, while officers found wanting would be prosecuted. A promise he has religiously kept.

To crown it all, a broad based State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, with overwhelming youth membership has been constituted, and given the mandate to entertain petitions from victims of human rights violations by the defunct SARS. And more importantly, the Governor set aside the sum of N200m to be disbursed as compensations to people who have proven cases of rights violations, torture and deaths from the activities of the defunct SARS in Anambra State.
This is obviously commendable.

Akpokuedike Global, before now, has been building and transforming the Youth in the State, through reform and innovative development strides.

Prince Azor who doubles as the Citizens Co-Chair, Open Government Partnership (OGP) recollected with nostalgia, that the governor, established Anambra Small Business Agency (ASBA) to give almost free collateral loans to our Youth and other citizens. There is on going gigantic Awka Township Stadium for youth empowetment and sports development. Also, a subsisting revolutionary agricultural scheme in collaboration with the Federal Govermment and sundry development partners, presently giving loans and capacity support to our teeming Youth. The list is almost inexhaustible.

However, with the unpleasant incidents that occurred as a result of continued protests, the Governor has taken precautionary steps to prevent further descent to lawlessness in Anambra State by imposing a 24 hour curfew in order to bring the tension under control.

We therefore, join efforts in solidarity and support with our working Governor to appeal to Ndi Anambra especially, our Youth.

Great, entrepreneurial and resilient Anambra Youth, We are very proud of your achievements. Let’s sheathe our swords and avail ourselves of the opportunity provided by the Judicial Panel of inquiry to ventilate our grievances on relevant issues.
Please, let’s leave the streets for NOW, to avoid further loss of lives and destruction of our hard earned heritage.
