Ekwunife describes incessant abandonment of projects as inimical to effective community development

• as Anambra Central Project Monitoring Committee submits Project Status Report

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife has stated that the incessant abandonment of projects in Nigeria is inimical to effective community development.

Ekwunife said this on Wednesday while receiving project status reports from the Project Monitoring Committee she set up to assess the status of Constituency, Zonal and Federal government projects within Anambra Central Senatorial District.

According to the Senator who received the reports from the Local Government Project Monitoring subcommittees, the reports of the committee will enable her identify projects that may have been left uncompleted by past representatives of the zone and facilitate their completion provided that the project is considered useful to the development of the host community.

“As we seek ways to properly utilize the limited funds made available by the federal government for zonal intervention projects, we have to move away from the culture of neglecting uncompleted projects initiated by past representatives of the zone when we can simply revive some of these projects and complete them for the benefit of the people of the constituency”, She said.

Ekwunife noted that It’s important to have the statistics of abandoned projects in the Senatorial District so that budgetary provisions can be made for those projects without prejudice to who initiated them. This according to her will ensure value for money as well as increase the pace of development in the Senatorial zone.

Appreciating the Senator for setting up the highly important committee, Prof. Micheal Uchenna Orji who is a Professor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and a member of the committee noted that two weeks after the committee’s visit to a project site in the University he received a call from the Vice Chancellor of the University that the contractor who was ab initio not on site is now back on site and has commenced work which shows that the project monitoring process is already yielding results.

In her closing remark, Senator Ekwunife appreciated the projects committee for their sacrifices and commitment. She assured that their report will be properly analysed to ensure that abandoned projects that will add value to the lives of the people recieve the needed attention.
