Eke Awka Market Wears New Look As Anambra Govt Intensifies Decongestion Of Markets, Roads

Eke Awka Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, for several years, was known for being notorious in traffic jam.

When ABS visited Eke Awka market where she observed that traffic jam has become a thing of the past.

Going to Eke Awka for any reason used to be a nightmare better imagined than experienced because of the way traders leave their shops, display their wares on the road while tricycles, shuttle buses and other vehicles pick up and drop their passengers indiscriminately for lack of designated motor parks for such activities.

Owing to this, human and vehicular movement at the Eke Awka Market axis became hard and very challenging that people were held up in traffic for up to forty minutes and beyond.

But months after taking up the mantle of leadership as the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo gave a directive through the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry for decongestion of markets in the state including Eke Awka Market.

For the past two weeks, anyone passing through the market will

appreciate the impact of that directive by the government as there is now free flow of traffic, as traders no longer display their goods on the road while motor parks for vehicles have been provided for commuters.

On daily basis, operatives of OCHA brigade, Blue Shield Security outfit, ATMA and Eke Awka Market taskforce, are seen enforcing orderliness in and around the market.

Speaking on the development, Brother Joseph Igboka, Mr Silvanus Emeka, Mrs Ugochukwu Okeke and Miss Oluchukwu Nweke, expressed delight at the new look of the market.

They also mentioned some areas that need improvement.

For the Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the market, Sir Charles Anaeriobi, the secret behind the new image of t the market is Governor Soludo’s directive that prompted the market leadership to bring in some level of reorganisation to the market.

He also suggested that government should extend enforcement period to seven o’clock in the evening every day to maintain free flow of traffic.

But the question still remains, must there be enforcement for people to do the right thing.
