The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ebonyi Chapter, has hailed Gov. David Umahi on his developmental strides in the state’s primary and secondary schools.

The union praised Nigeria at 62 and Ebonyi at 26, saying there has been tremendous progress since the creation of the state in 1996.

Mr Francis Elechi, state NUT Chairman, made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN) on Saturday in Abakaliki.

According to him, in the entire country, Ebonyi made reasonable progress in the area of education, especially at the level of primary and secondary schools.

“Yes, we have made as a lot of progress considering the existing infrastructure and the number of schools in our communities.

“I remember before now, people used to go far before they could register their children into schools, but now schools are almost at the doorstep of every citizen.

“The structures and curricula have been upgraded and modernised. I know we are not yet there, but I must tell you, the country and Ebonyi in particular have witnessed changes,” Elechi said.

On the training of teachers, the NUT boss said there has also been an improvement in harnessing the available manpower resources.

He urged the teachers in the state to redouble their efforts and reciprocate the “good gesture“ of the government.

“I, therefore, urge the Federal Government to listen to the demands of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) so that the latter can call off their industrial action.

“I must tell you that the strike has done much harm to our universities.  Many youths have resorted to crimes such as Yahoo-Yahoo and robbery. Some female students have got unwanted pregnancies.

“The incessant strikes have done much harm to the university system. The government should listen to them so that they can call off the strike,” he advised. (NAN)
