Open Alliance (OA) Anambra, a civil society organisation, has hailed the outgoing governor of Anambra, Chief Willie Obiano, for signing up to the Open Governance Partnership (OGP).

The Coordinator of OA, Mr Chris Azor, said this at a review meeting held in Awka on Thursday. He noted that Obiano was the first governor to sign up to the document in the entire Southern Nigeria when he appended his signature in 2017.

Azor said the OGP which was a demonstration of the willingness of government to make the people part of governance, enabled the civil society to ask questions and obtain relevant clarifications. He said though there were issues with effective implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, the OGP made it easy to obtain government information.

Azor said the review meeting was necessary because the OA had to introduce the OGP to the incoming administration led by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

He said that was why it demanded that the content of the Dr Oby Ezekwesili transition report be made public soon after it was presented to Soludo.

He urged Anambra residents to wake up to their civic duty of holding the government accountable by making conscious effort to be abreast of activities of their leaders.

Membership of the group included; labour unions, pensioners, women group, and civil society organisations.
