COVID-19: YESS and Anambra first campaign (Video)

The role of civil society is often neglected in a time of pandemic like this, but it could be the most important. For one, civil society plays a key role in combating individualism. American sociologist Robert Nisbet noted that individualism, and the loneliness and alienation that result from it, have created a new “quest for community” and the coming together to achieve a common goal. Ultimately, civil society is critical as it creates stronger communities, builds friendships, and promotes solidarity.

As governments and nations continue to wrestle the Covid-19 pandemic, We at YESS encourage civil society groups across the globe to unite and mobilize support for their respective mentors and governments. Our mentor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has generously donated N10M to support Governor Willie Obiano’s effort at combating Coronavirus & Criminality in Anambra State. Not long after Soludo’s donation was announced, various groups began to mobilize funds from members to support him. They include:

  1. United Anambra Youths Assembly (U-AYA) – N1M
  2. Soludo Support Group (SSG) – N1M
  3. Obiano Apostles Movement for Consolidation (OAMC) – 500K; among other groups.

For YESS, the idea was to mobilize $1000 (N360, 000) – $1 (N360) each from atleast 1000 members – and donate in support of a man & idea, Prof Soludo, we absolutely believe in. It’s interesting to see young persons uniting to contribute & raise the money within 5days – despite the prevailing harsh economic realities. These persons made the choice to generate the target-sum on behalf of the teeming YESS members. They are:

  1. Mr Joanchia Akamelu – 100K
  2. Dr Okey Okoye – 100K
  3. Nelson Omenugha – 50K
  4. Dr Ogenna Omenugha – 25K
  5. Barr Maxwell Udechukwu – 20K
  6. Barr Chijioke Ifediora – 20K
  7. Arc Gideon Chinedu Okeke – 20K
  8. Mr Linus Nwankwo – 15K
  9. Engr Onyeaso Kingsley Chukwujekwu – 5K
  10. Arc Chukwuemeka Chinweze – 5K

We thank them immensely.

There has to be a society before one can talk of doing business, playing politics and ultimately living out his or her dreams. For YESS, the core Soludo Apostles, it’s Anambra First. May Anambra Succeed.

Convener, YESS.
