Courts remands mechanic for alleged robbery

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded an 18-year-old mechanic, Emmanuel Odihi in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, for allegedly robbing a man of his phone by pointing a toy gun at victim.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Odubayo, who did not take the defendant’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

Odubayo adjourned the case until July 19 for mention.

The defendant, who resides in Ojo area of Lagos State, is being tried for conspiracy and armed robbery.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Olasunkanmi Adejumola, told the court that the defendant and other persons still at large, allegedly committed the offences on June 8 at Alaba-Rago area of the state.

Adejumola said the defendant and others still at large accosted the complainant, Aliu Mohammed and pointed the toy gun at him.

He said they snatched Mohammed’s phone from his hand and took to their heels.

“The complainant shouted for help and people pursued them; the defendant was arrested while others escaped with the phone worth N63,000.

“The toy gun was recovered from the defendant,” he said.

Adejumola said the offences violated Sections 297 and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 297 attracts 21 years’ imprisonment if found guilty. (NAN)
