COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE CONGRESS OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) ANAMBRA STATE COUNCIL HELD ON THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 2022 AT THE GODWIN EZEEMO INTERNATIONAL PRESS CENTRE, AWKA

The April 2022 Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council presided over by the Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Ph. D, deliberated on issues concerning the Council, the State and the Nation and made the following resolutions:

  1. Congress commended the Comrade Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu-led executive for the programmes and initiatives it had taken to ensure the unification and growth of the NUJ Anambra State Council since assumption of office. It specially commended the efforts made by the Executive to ensure that Congresses are well attended by members of the Union. It observed the sporadic increase in attendance by members.
  2. Congress welcomed her members living with disabilities under the Ministry of Information Chapel who attended the meeting for the first time. It commended the immediate past administration of the Anambra State Government for ensuring that the welfare of people with disabilities was bettered while calling on successive administrations to sustain such policies to create a more inclusive society.
  3. Congress welcomed the new Executive Governor of the State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR who was sworn in on March 17, 2022.
  4. Congress also welcomed the state government’s ban on illegal collection of levies and revenues and all forms of touting and for assuring to introduce more digital platforms for collection of such revenues. Congress, however, observed that touts seem to have changed their mode of operation in the collection of such levies. Congress noted that the illegal revenue collectors now move from vehicle to vehicle asking drivers and other business owners to pay such levies. It, therefore, called on the state government to increase its enforcement tactics of the ban to ensure the success of the policy.
  5. Congress regretted the level of insecurity still being witnessed in the state as seen in recent attacks on Local Government Headquarters in Nnewi South and Aguata. While commending the Anambra State Government for actions already taken to address these insecurity concerns such as the convening of the one day peace building and security dialogue and the setting up of the Truth, Peace and Justice Committee led by Nigeria’s former Human Rights Chief, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, it called for urgent actions to nip the insecurity situation in the bud and guarantee the security of life and property in the State.
  6. Congress also regretted the level of insecurity in the country as seen in bandit attacks in different parts of the country and kidnapping especially in Northern Nigeria. It then called on the Federal Government to show commitment in the fight against insurgency in the country. Congress advised that security agencies be properly empowered and equipped to fight the hydra-headed monster called insecurity and ensure swift prosecution of those who are perpetrating violence in the country.
  7. Congress gave room for the different committees of the NUJ Anambra Chapter to do a one-minute presentation of their blueprint geared towards enhancing the visibility of the NUJ Anambra State council as well as enhancing and building the capacity and competence of journalists and broadcasters in the state.
  8. Congress also welcomed the former Chief Protocol Officer and Deputy Chief of Staff to H.E Governor Willie Obiano, Mr. Uzuegbuna Okagbue, who came on a familiarization visit to the NUJ Anambra Council regarding his political ambition to represent Anambra Central Senatorial District at the Red Chambers.
  9. Congress welcomed High Chief Azubuike Ekweozor (Ide Umuawulu), who also came on a familiarization visit to the NUJ Anambra Council regarding his political aspiration to represent Awka North and South Federal Constituency at the Green Chambers under the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
  10. The Congress also welcomed Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese; Rev. Innocent Chukwudi Peace-Udochukwu, Founding President, Congress for Igbo Agenda (CIA) And President, Living Fountain Ministries International (LIFOM); and Emeka Ejide, ( Idejiogwuogwu) Executive Director, My Child, my Care Foundation who paid friendly visits to the NUJ.
  11. The Congress urged the members of the Union to purchase NUJ designed Polo and Cap for the May Day celebration at the cost of N2,800 per package. It also urged chapel heads to write to the NUJ leadership concerning challenges of their chapels which the Congress would use as part of the May Day agenda.
