The Archbishop, Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Revd Alex Ibezim, has rejoiced with Christians all over the world on the occasion of this year’s Christmas celebration, urging them to use the occasion to promote peace, love and unity.

Ibezim spoke at the Bishop’s Palace in Awka, the Anambra State capital while delivering his Christmas message.

“As far as I’m concerned, the true meaning of Christmas is love. The real Christmas story is the story of incarnation, God becoming a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ.

“Why did God do such a thing? Because He loves us. Why was Christmas necessary? Because we needed a Saviour.

“Why do we celebrate Christmas each year? It is out of gratitude for what God did for us; we remember His birth by worshipping Him first and foremost; giving each other gifts, being especially conscious of the poor and less fortunate”, the Archbishop said.

He, however, lamented the rising spate of idolatry in the country, saying that many people were now turning to idol worship in their quest for material wealth.

He said the rate at which people, especially young men were turning to idol worship was worrisome; and therefore called on parents to pay more attention to their children’s upbringing.

“This Christmas is coming up at a time when idolatry is rife”, he lamented. The prelate also cautioned politicians and others against actions capable of upsetting the peace in Anambra State and Nigeria in general, saying that no meaningful development could take place in an environment that is not peaceful.
