Catholic schools not for profit but for quality education – Official

An official of the Knights of St. Mulumba, a society in the Catholic church, Sir Charles Mbelede, on Thursday said that Catholic schools were not for profit-making.

Mbelede made the assertion at the 70th anniversary of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba held at St. Leo Catholic Church, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said that Catholic schools were not for profit but to groom young stars to be better leaders of tomorrow.

Mbelede, the Supreme Leader, said that in spite of the challenges in the country, the Catholic schools still provided quality education to the people.

The theme of the anniversary was: “Appraising the Past Redefining the Present and Reshaping the Future.”

The knight who spoke against the backdrop of high cost of education in the country said that mission schools were funded by the community with no profit motive.

“The Knights of St. Mulumba has constructed many schools and has supported in the building of universities owned by the church.

“The church ensures that quality teaching and learning by procuring the needed qualified personnel that are well paid.

“Facilities in the schools are modern to inspire people to learn and be good citizens. The church charges fees to run the schools and nothing else,” he said.

He said that mission schools fees were relatively low and affordable with quality outcomes when compared with other private schools.

He decried high rate of out of school children in the country and urged indigent people to avail themselves of the organisation’s scholarship scheme to acquire education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the organisation was founded on June 4 1953,  by late Rev. Fr. Anslem Ojepua, for humanitarian works.

The anniversary which kicked-off on Wednesday in Lagos would be celebrated in all the regions of the country with inauguration of projects to arouse public knowledge on the workings of the Knights. (NAN)
