Russian athletes and sports federations from seven sports have filed appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against bans from international events after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

CAS said on Tuesday it has received appeals from biathlon, figure-skating, football, gymnastics, rowing, rugby and speed-skating.

And the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) is appealing a ban by the European Olympic Committee from its 2022 summer and winter Olympic youth festivals.

The biggest case is in football where the Russian federation RFU is contesting the ban of its men’s national team by the world governing FIFA from World Cup qualifying.

Poland got a bye into a playoff final they won against Sweden.

They are also appealing a decision by Europe’s UEFA to ban Russia from its club and national team events including the women’s Euros this summer in England.

CAS recently rejected Russian appeals to stay the FIFA and UEFA bans until a full CAS ruling has been made.

The court said that “no procedural calendar has been established yet” in either case but the panels of judges are being constituted.(dpa/NAN)
