Be Proud Of Studying Agriculture Because It’s A Game Changer- Agric Commissioner

The Directorate of Agriculture, Student Union Government (SUG), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), has held an Agricultural Summit at the university auditorium with the theme: Evolvement, Smart Technology Integration and Agriculture. The event also featured an award ceremony for winners of an essay competition.

The summit, which commenced in the early hours of the day, began with opening remarks from Professor Cordelia Ebenebe, who represented the Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture. Prof. Ebenebe, a former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, welcomed participants and urged students to appreciate the opportunity to study agriculture.“Those of you in Agriculture should be happy with yourselves. Most prominent Nigerian leaders have links to agriculture,” she stated.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including Mr. Aneto Samuel, CEO of Dynamo Group, and Mr. Emmanuel Ezeano, Managing Director of ECNEL Nigeria Ltd. Mr. Ezeano, in his address, educated students on hydroponic farming, the essential nutrients involved, and how to effectively monitor hydroponic systems.“It is not all about having land; it’s about having the knowledge,” he remarked, adding that agriculture is more rewarding than real estate. He encouraged students to “start small, think global” and to find real-world problems to solve.

Also speaking at the event was Engr. Franklin, who discussed the benefits of partnering with government agencies to expand agricultural initiatives.In a brief interview session, Mr. Okwuchukwu Okonkwo, CEO of Majesty Real Estate and Investment, shared insights on his journey in agriculture. When asked about the challenges of farming, he acknowledged that, like every business, agriculture has its hurdles.“The major problems are accessing seeds at affordable rates and the high capital investment required,” he explained.He advised aspiring agripreneurs to overcome procrastination, learn from their mistakes, and remain resilient. On how he manages both real estate and agriculture, he said, “I find synergy and create balance between both fields.”The event concluded with the recognition of individuals who contributed to its success. Awards were presented, and students were treated to refreshments and musical performances.
