Yesterday, March 24, 2021, the Unions in Nnamdi Azikiwe University organized a town hall meeting with the contestants seeking elective positions in the University Governing Council at the University auditorium.

Almost all contestants attended. A good number of the University community graced the occasion. Each contestant spoke for five minutes in response to six questions drafted by the Unions.

One thing was clear: that every contestant endeavoured to impress with alluring wordings and manifestoes. Indeed, many displayed oratory skills that were compelling. And if elections are won on the singular yardstick of public locution, many would have been getting ready to celebrate their victory.

We want to believe that yesterday’s assembly would be the distinguishing feature of the Ivory Tower. It should be able to differentiate the University from the marketplace. Through this unprecedented interaction, the three Unions remind us why the University must champion this paradigm shift from the prevailing status quo of Nigerian elections. That was why the questions were crafted as an intellectual exercise that would deviate from the characteristic rhetoric of electoral slogans witnessed in the larger Nigerian society.

By avoiding questions that are controversial, the forum did not allow any individual an opportunity to poison public feelings, instead its questions were focused on the essence of our mission in the University.

I wish to thank the three Unions for this laudable gesture and also enjoin the University community to emulate such gesture in similar endeavours.

I hereby congratulate the contestants who came out yesterday to speak with that audacious poise and attitude. I wish every contestant well and pray God to see everyone through.
