Appeal Court Reverses Nullification of Kano LG Election

The Court of Appeal has overturned a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the October 2024 Kano local government election, declaring that the lower court lacked jurisdiction. In a unanimous decision on Friday, a three-member panel led by Justice Biobele Georgewill held that issues relating to state electoral commissions must be addressed by state high courts.
The court allowed appeals filed by the Kano Attorney General, House of Assembly, and KANSIEC, ruling that the Federal High Court wrongly assumed jurisdiction over the case filed by the APC challenging the composition of KANSIEC.
A separate ruling also reversed a judgment rejecting the NNPP’s candidate list submitted by the Kwankwaso faction, with the Appeal Court noting the dispute was an internal party matter beyond the court’s jurisdiction.
