ANSACA, PARTNERS INTENSIFY EFFORTS TO ELIMINATE MOTHER-TO-CHILD HIV TRANSMISSION IN ANAMBRA
The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), in collaboration with key HIV implementing partners, has intensified efforts to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission through a joint supportive supervisory visit to Mentor Mothers across nine health facilities in the state.
The exercise, conducted under Semester 6 supervision of the Global Fund N-THRIP GC7 Grant, involved representatives of the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN), State AIDS and STI Control Programme (SASCP), and Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNi).
The facilities visited included COOUTH, Regina Caeli Hospital Awka, NAUTH Nnewi, Diocesan Hospital Nnewi, Rise Clinic Nise, Federal Medical Centre Onitsha, Immaculate Heart Hospital Nkpor, Community Health Centre Umunya and General Hospital Enugwu-Ukwu.
Mentor Mothers provide essential peer support to pregnant women living with HIV, encouraging treatment adherence, viral suppression and continued engagement in care throughout pregnancy, delivery and after childbirth. Their work is critical to reducing the risk of HIV transmission to babies.
During the visit, the team reviewed their activities and follow up records, assessed their collaboration with healthcare workers and provided on site guidance to strengthen service delivery and address identified gaps.
The exercise featured entry and exit meetings with stakeholders, providing opportunities to discuss findings and agree on measures for improved performance.
ANSACA reaffirmed its commitment to coordinating efforts with partners towards eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission, achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, in line with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s vision of a healthy and prosperous Anambra State.
The agency appreciated its partners, participating health facilities and dedicated Mentor Mothers for their continued commitment to protecting mothers and children.
