Anambra reaffirms commitment to advancing female representation in leadership

The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing female representation in diplomacy and international leadership as the world observed the International Day of Women in Diplomacy on June 24, 2026.
The annual observance recognizes women who have broken barriers in foreign policy, peace negotiations, and global affairs while highlighting the need for greater inclusion in diplomatic spaces.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, (Adaejiejemba), the state government celebrated the courage, intellect, and resilience of women who continue to represent their nations and shape the direction of global affairs.
The Commissioner noted that the contributions of women in diplomacy reinforce the fact that diplomatic processes become stronger, more inclusive, and more effective when women’s voices are fully represented and respected.
“Diplomacy needs women’s voices. Their impact reinforces the truth that diplomacy becomes stronger, more inclusive, and more effective when women’s voices are fully represented and respected.”
She called on governments, institutions, and stakeholders at every level to intentionally promote and invest in women’s participation in diplomacy, foreign policy, and international leadership.
Mrs. Onyekesi also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to empowering women and girls across Anambra State through education, mentorship, advocacy, and access to opportunities that prepare them to occupy positions of influence locally, nationally, and internationally.
According to her, “When women lead with wisdom, competence, and purpose, communities thrive and nations grow stronger.”
The Commissioner dedicated the day’s message to women currently serving in diplomatic spaces and to young girls who aspire to represent Nigeria on global platforms. She emphasized that the observance should serve as a reminder that their voices matter, their contributions are valuable, and their place at decision-making tables is essential.
The International Day of Women in Diplomacy was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to promote full and equal participation of women in diplomacy and to prevent the discrimination that has historically limited their advancement in the field.
In Anambra, the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has continued to align with this global objective through programs focused on leadership development, skills training, and advocacy for gender-inclusive policies.
