Anambra Police Advocates Ethical Reporting, Promises Special Tags for Journalists
The Anambra State Police Command has called on journalists to uphold ethical standards in the reportage of security issues and disclosed plans to introduce special identification tags for accredited journalists to enhance their safety while on official assignments.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known while receiving the newly elected executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), ABS Chapel, during a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters, Amawbia.
SP Ikenga urged journalists to verify facts, avoid sensational and sentimental reports, and always consider the security implications of their publications while encouraging media practitioners to strengthen collaboration with the Police and other sister security agencies to ensure the dissemination of accurate, balanced and timely information capable of promoting public confidence and supporting ongoing security operations.
He disclosed that the Command is working on introducing special identification tags for journalists to enable security personnel easily identify accredited media professionals while covering security operations, emergencies and other official assignments as according to SP Ikenga, the initiative will not only enhance the safety of journalists but also strengthen the cordial relationship between the Police and the media in the discharge of their respective responsibilities.
The Police spokesman further highlighted recent operational successes recorded by the Command, including the arrest of suspected kidnappers, the rescue of victims and the recovery of arms and other exhibits through intelligence-led operations assuring residents that the Command remains committed to sustaining the fight against crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Anambra State.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, ABS Chapel, Comrade Emmanuel Okonkwo, commended the Anambra State Police Command for its commitment to tackling crime and appreciated SP Ikenga for his accessibility and support to journalists reaffirming the commitment of the new executive to promoting ethical journalism and maintaining a strong partnership with the Police and other security agencies in the interest of peace, security and sustainable development in Anambra State.
