Anambra lawmaker initiates monthly package for elderly

Mr Innocent Ojike, member-elect for Oyi Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, has inaugurated an N10,000 monthly allowance for the elderly in his constituency.

Ojike, during the launch at Nteje community, said the package for the elderly was in fulfillment of part of his campaign promises to his constituents.

He said that the gesture was targeted at supporting the elderly, who could no longer work to earn a living to take care of themselves.

“During my campaign, I saw many elderly in my constituency coming out to support me throughout the period. I was really touched by their doggedness.

“So, I decided to launch the N10,000 monthly stipend for them to support their welfare and well-being. These people are senior citizens who have rendered service in one way or the other.

“Now that they can no longer work to earn a living, they need all the support they can get, ” he said.

Ojike also announced plans to empower youths through his human capital development scheme and scholarships for brilliant students in the area.

Also speaking, Dr Nnamdi Iloduba, the President-General, Nteje community, commended the lawmaker for keeping his campaign promises.

“What you did is not common with conventional politicians, most political office holders never deem it necessary to honour promises they made to the people,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Pa Patrick Igbokwe, commended the legislator for identifying with the elderly in the community.

Igbokwe, who said that there was a lack of power supply and good roads in the area, appealed to the lawmaker to use his position to attract government presence to the area.
