Anambra Begins Clampdown on Tax Defaulters
By Lawrence Nwimo, Awka
The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has commenced a statewide clampdown on tax defaulters following the expiration of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration and Tax Regularisation Scheme (VAIDS).
The Executive Chairman of AIRS, Ikeazor Okonkwo, disclosed this during a press briefing in Awka, the state capital, Tuesday.
Okonkwo said the VAIDS, which offered taxable persons, individuals, businesses and corporate organisations the opportunity to voluntarily regularise their outstanding tax liabilities with applicable concessions, ended on September 5, 2026.
He stated that with the expiration of the Scheme, the window for voluntary tax regularisation has closed, and the Service has accordingly commenced full statutory compliance monitoring and enforcement actions against non-compliant taxpayers.

According to him, enforcement will apply to taxpayers who failed to regularise their liabilities under VAIDS, those who received Best of Judgment (BOJ) assessments and failed to object to or settle within the prescribed period, and those who underpaid, under-remitted or otherwise failed to discharge their statutory tax obligations.
The AIRS boss warned that non-compliant taxpayers may face issuance and service of final statutory Demand Notices and sealing of premises where applicable, recovery of outstanding liabilities through lawful enforcement measures, as well as prosecution and commencement of court proceedings.

He advised all affected taxpayers to take immediate steps to regularise their outstanding obligations and ensure full compliance to avoid embarrassment.
Okonkwo added that for enquiries, verification or complaints, taxpayers can reach the Service via http://tax.services.an.gov.ng, [email protected], [email protected] or through its customer service lines: 07066727750, 09053234816, 08083066051, 08178070000.
He reaffirmed that AIRS remains committed to a fair, transparent, technology-driven and accountable tax administration system that supports sustainable development and economic growth of the state.
