Anambra Guber: Youths embarks on “Vote Not Fight” awareness campaign

Youths in Anambra under the aegis of ‘Catch Them Young Community Initiative,’ have organised town hall Meeting in Anambra North Senatorial Zone to propagate Vote Not Fight awareness and why people should participate actively in election without violence.

The meeting was necessitated by need to stop the security tension, wanton killings, destruction of properties, threat to lives and the presumed doubts over the forthcoming Anambra State gubernatorial poll.

The event which held at conference Hall, Olive guest house inside Sharon House GRA Onitsha, Anambra State attracted the presence of Director, National Orientation Agency Anambra State, Mr. Charles Nwoji represented by Mr. Obi Remigus .

According to the Executive Director of Catch them young Community Initiative, Mr.Nonso Orakwe, the program began precisely on 15th August 2021 in Anambra State.

He stated that since then, they have been moving round in different zones of the State, inculcating spirit of none violence in the youths especially during and after voting.

He revealed that Catch them young Community Initiative is being sponsored by United States Agency International Development ( USAID) and National Democratic Institute (NDI), stating that youths were being used through Town Hall Meetings to pass the awareness down to the grassroot.

He further emphasized that efforts are in top gear to propagate the voting awareness to the people before November 6 election. He expressed that the group have synergy with Media which he said would has been the fastest medium to reach people .

” Voting is compulsory to everyone. We shall come out to vote on that day. Whether we vote or not, there must be election and a leader must emerge. So, it is better we come out and vote on that day. You have right to vote and voting is your power to choose a leader.

“If we can not change this urgly trend now, there is no time to do it . If nothing happens now, it would not happen again” He posited.

Also speaking, the coordinator of catch them young Community Initiative, Anambra North, Mr. Okadigbo Ifeanyi Ogunoegbulam described election offence as one of the worst crime committed by any person against his community, or his state, pointing out that if the electoral process is incapacitated in one way or the other, the outcome will affects every body including the unborn baby.

He recounted vote buying, bribery during voting, thuggery, impersonation which he said are among the electoral offences.

 Similarly,  the project manager of the organization, Mr. Orji Isreal explained to the youths the paramount aspect of registration, voters cards, and eigheen year of age which according to him qualifies one to vote during the election. 

Equally, the representative of the Director of National Orientation Agency, Anambra State, Mr. Remigus Obi, urged youths to endeavour to change the narration of voting in the society, appealing them not to engage in thuggery or acts of violence during the election.

Some youths who spoke during the event includes Uju Nwanekezie, Hon. Ikeadimu Ikeagwuonu while interaction, entertainments, signing of pledge cards,  questions and answers formed high point of the event.
