The historic on-going public endorsement and patronage to the University on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra State, took a new turn weekend when the Anambra State Government added its support, donating #300,000,000 towards the university's infrastructural and systemic development.
The Bishop on the Niger, the Rt Rev Dr Owen Nwokolo, broke the news of the donation Sunday, February 11, 2024 during the collation and installation of 12 ministers of the diocese as archdeacons and canons at the All Saints' Cathedral, Onitsha.
According to the bishop, the said #300M has long been physically received by the institution as he described the gesture as a big plus to the state government.
"Considered from all perspectives, the gesture is a plus to the state government, especially, to the Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo. We want to appreciate him and encourage him to do more, to continue.
"This is because education is the liberating power of the nation. Without knowledge people will perish. If Anambra people have a good opportunity to study in a free, comfortably enabling environment, it will augour well not only for the state, but also for the nation at large."
He disclosed that the governor had earlier made a similar donation to Peter University, Achina, in the governor's said desire to partner the church in the development of education in the state.
Much earlier, several individuals and organisations had expressed their endorsement and patronage to the university on the Niger through their various supports to the institution.
The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Elections, His Excellency, Peter Obi, recently visited the university and donated #10million for its development.
Also, a few weeks ago, the Senator representing Anambra North, Dr Tony Nwoye, promised to help provide administrative complex of the university at about #400m and promised to tar three major roads of school.
In the same vein, Sir Emeka Offor had while marking his 65th birthday recently, donated books valued millions of Naira to the university.
The Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation (SEOF) in conjunction with the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital, (DIOMH) Oraifite, had on its own donated large quantities of Critical Health Intervention Drugs to the take-off campus of the University on the Niger, the Iyi-Enu University Teaching Hospital, among other teaching hospitals in the South East.
