The Anambra State Government has condemned the alleged murder of the children of Mrs. Ike Onyinye of Ideani, Idemili North Local Government Area, reportedly by her husband’s concubine.
The State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, condemned the killing in a press statement issued on Wednesday.
Mrs. Onyinye had earlier raised an alarm and appealed for justice following the tragic death of her children in the incident that has thrown the Ideani community into mourning.
Reacting to the development, Commissioner Onyekesi described the incident as heartbreaking, barbaric and unacceptable, noting that no child deserves to die in such a cruel manner.
She said the mother’s plea for justice must not go unanswered, adding that the ministry will not stand by while women and children are subjected to violence.
“She deserves to see the person responsible for this loss held accountable, and she should receive all the support and empathy she needs to cope with this devastating loss,” the Commissioner said.
Onyekesi noted that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies and assured that the ministry will closely follow up on the case to ensure justice is served.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo-led administration to protecting the rights and welfare of women and children across the state, stressing that perpetrators of violence against women and children will not go unpunished.
The Ministry also called on residents to report cases of domestic violence and child abuse promptly, and urged families to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes.
According to reports, the suspect, alleged to be the concubine of the victims’ father, is currently in custody as investigation continues.
