Anambra Community bans 25 Women For Abetting, Causing Unrest

A total of twenty five (25) women from Ezi Umunya , in Umunya , Oyi Local Government Area have been asked to stay on their own, from the rest of the community in accordance with Igbo customs and tradition for sacrilegious acts

The traditional ruler of Umunya , Igwe Kris Onyekwuluje announced the decision during a media briefing at his palace.

On arrival at Umunya, Newsmen met women, men and youths from Ezi Umunya who staged a peaceful protest to register their grievances on what they call incessant matcheting of youths and men of the village by some group of men who they alleged are under a cult and were being supported by the ostracized women.

The women, men and youths were carrying placards with various inscriptions as they made their way to the palace of the traditional ruler.

At the palace, the Chairman of the village Mr Obinna Okonkwo who appealed to Igwe Onyekwuluje to use his good office to put an end to rascalities going on in their village said that they can no longer put up with pathetic act of running away from their homes for fear of receiving matchet cuts from some of their village members who go about cutting and beating anyone who refused to join their cult.

Another member of the village Mr. Daniel Udechukwu regretted that the ugly incidence started since 2009, and has taken a dangerous turn since 2015 when it became rampant, lamenting that the villagers can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed.

The President General Umunya Development Union, Engineer Kenneth Okafor and President General of the Woman wing of the community Mrs. Francisca Ekweozor and other executive members , expressed satisfaction with the manner with which the traditional ruler is handling affairs of the community and threw their total support on the monarch’s decision to separate the offenders from the rest of the community as it was in line with the custom and tradition of the community.

Briefing newsmen on his stand on the issue, Igwe Onyekwuluje said that he cannot allow few individuals from his community jeopardize the peace enthroned in the state by Governor Obiano.

Igwe Onyekwuluje decreed that hence forth, all involved in the act should stay on their own until they appease the land as he said that they committed sacrilege.

He warned them to desist from causing unrest in the community as any act of violence in any community will rubbish the peace achieved since the Obiano administration came on board and said he cannot allow that under his watch.

He also announced that he, alongside the Igwe in council, Ojiana Age Grade, Ndi Nze na Ozo Umunya, Oganiru age grade, and the town union executive will constitute a Committee to be headed by Igwe Onyekwuluje , to ensure that no land would be sold and no foundation would be laid without clearance from the Committee.

He said that the Committee will discharge their duties efficiently without charging any fee from anybody and will ensure lasting peace in the community since it is a known fact that land ownership and sales are responsible for the problems in the town, adding that the new land rules will be binding on all including himself.

Some of the victims of the matchet cut who have been discharge from the hospital were present during the event while some others are still receiving treatment at the hospital.
