Anambra assembly constitutes 29 standing committees

The Anambra House of Assembly on Tuesday constituted 29 standing committees to carry out oversight functions and set legislative agenda for the eighth Assembly.

The Speaker of the house, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, read out the list of the committee Chairmen and their Deputies during the plenary session.

Udeze urged the committees to work effectively for the good of the people.

The list of the chairmen include Ejike Okechukwu (Finance and Appropriation), Innocent Ojike (Commerce, Trade and Industry), Fredrick Ezenwa (Environment) and Mr Jude Umennajiego (Homeland and Boundary Matters).

It also has Douglas Egbuna (Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs), Chukwuma Okoye (Screening and Election matters), Chukwuebuka Igwe (House Services and Special Duties) and Nkechi Ogbuefi (Women and Social Welfare).

Others are Johnbosco Akaegbobi (Public Procurement), Ike Augustine (Youth Development and Sports), Noble Igwe (Public Accounts), Francis Azotani (Information, Technology and Creative Economy) and Mr Henry Mbachu (Culture, Entertainment and Tourism).

Also in the list are Emmanuel Okpalaeke (Education), Emmanuel Okafor (Judiciary and Justice), Calistus Nweke (Public Petitions), Mr Chukwuebuka Golden (Agriculture), Mr Nonso Atuchukwu (Housing and Urban Development) and Mr Patrick Udoba (Transportation).

Others include Jude Okoye (Internally Generated Revenue), Jude Akpua (Land Survey and Town Planning), Emmanuel Nwafor (Works and Infrastructure) and Chukwuka Obu (Economic Planning, SDGs and International Organisations).

The rest are Anthony Muobike (Health), Mr Ikenna Ofodeme (Rules and Business), Mr Bernard Udemezue (Pilgrimage, Ethics and Privileges), Mr Kingsley Udemezue (CSOs, Establishments and Labour matters), Mr Chidiebere Ibemeka (Petroleum and Mineral Resources) and Mr Chimezie Ikwunne (Power and Water Resources).

Meanwhile, the house has called for extensive awareness creation, strict compliance and enforcement of the Law to control lavish burial and funeral ceremonies in the state.

The house resolution followed a motion moved under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by Mr Anthony Muobike, representing Aguata Constituency ll.

According to Muobike, the show of affluence, wasteful and negative practices associated with funeral and burial rites in communities calls for concern.

The speaker urged Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to direct the relevant ministry to encourage religious and community leaders to create awareness of the Anambra State Burial Law 2019.

The house adjourned sitting to July 27.
