Anambra Assembly Appeals FG To Control Erosion At FEDPOKO

Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Federal Government and relevant agencies to curb the gully erosion at Federal Polytechnic, Oko to deter further damage.

The Chairman House committee on Environment, Honourable Edward Ibuzo made the call when the committee visited the erosion site on fact finding.

House of Assembly Correspondent Chukwuemeka Modilim  reports that while commending the management team of the polytechnic for the efforts they are making to tackle the problem, Honourable Ibuzo explained that his committee visited the gully on the directive of the Anambra State House of Assembly to see where it can assist the polytechnic to arrest the erosion menace ravaging parts of the school.

The lawmaker observed that the erosion is very devastating and called on the Federal government and relevant agencies to take urgent steps to control the gully erosion, even as he assured that the committee will take the message to all possible areas where help could come from for the benefit of the polytechnic.

In their separate speeches, some members of the committee, including Honourable Emeka Aforka and Honourable Okechukwu Okoye lamented that the erosion has dealt big blow on the land scape of the institution and is beyond the financial capability of the polytechnic urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to put up preventive measures in the area to save lives.

In his speech during a meeting of the polytechnic management team with the House committee on Environment, the Deputy Rector Administration, Dr. Kenneth Ezekwe who represented the Rector, Dr. Francisca Nwafulugo disclosed that a section of perimeter fence of the polytechnic has been consumed by the gully and has also encroached into the one-point-two-three-kilometer road around there commissioned last year.

On his part, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Malam Kale Kawu represented by a member of the council, Dr. Chibuzo Asomugha said the Council is working in partnership with the school management team to solve the problem
