Dr. Ifedi Okwenna

A gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Ifedi Okwenna, has blamed lack of basic infrastructure as responsible for the underdevelopment of Anambra state.

Okwenna said he would fast-track development through the provision of basic infrastructures as well as develop what he described as Anambra brand which would serve a development model for the entire state, if elected governor in the next dispensation.

Meanwhile he stressed the need for the conduct of credible primary elections for the best and most qualified candidate to emerge for next year’s governorship contest in Anambra state.

Okwenna said it was pertinent that the party conducted its primaries in the most transparent manner where all aspirants on the platform of the party would be given a level playing field to test their popularities and acceptance amongst delegates.

He said he has formally declared his aspiration to contest for the office of the governor of Anambra state, when he visited the party house in Awka to intimate the state executives of the party of his ambition to be part of the gubernatorial race next year.

According to him, ” I have officially told my party; the Peoples Democratic Party that I am aspiring for the office of the governor of Anambra state. That I want to be the next occupant of the governnent house in Anambra state.”

” I have also reminded my party that this is the brightest chance we have to occupy the governnent house after 16 years of long wait. We lost the office since 2006 and became the leading opposition in this state. This is the time we need to work hard to ensure we emerge victorious and to achieve that, we must identify amongst our aspirants the most qualified, the most credible, the most knowledgeable, the most versatile and most creative person to carry the banna of this party.”

” Time has gone when we put people with baggages to lead us. As a leading opposition, what we owe our party members is to organise free, fair and credible primaries. Recently we held a meeting of aspirants and we decided amongst ourselves that if free, fair, credible primary election is organised, whoever leads, others will follow. We must rebuild our government and our governmental system because the legitimacy of any political and social system is built on trust and confidence and that is what we have lost today.”

” Today less than 20% of Ndi-Anambra have trust in the governnent of the day and that invariably is affecting the social and political development of our state. When the state was created some 29 years ago, we had high hopes that this state would be a wonderful state but leadership has been bane of development.”

” 29 years on, we lack basic infrastructures to back up vast entreprenurial and commercial opportunities that abound in our own state. Issues of migration, unemployment, erosion and climate change problems, security challenges, inadequate affordable housing and urban decay are posing novel challenges.

” We must innovate Anambra state. We must also innovate the governnent and the people. We must develop our infrastructure because the COVID-19 pandemic has paved way for virtual business transactions. We need to build a governnent that partners with the people to grow and develop our state.”
