Anambra 2021: Harris Chuma Calls for Sanity Among Media Handlers

The President of Anambra Independent Media Support Organization, AIMS, Dr. Harris Chuma has urged players in the media space and social media handlers to imbibe spirit of professionalism in the discharge of their functions ahead of the governorship election in Anambra State.

Dr. Chuma made the call on Wednesday while addressing Media Professionals during a world Press Conference in Awka, in preparation of Anambra Independent Media Summit scheduled to hold April 5, 2021.

He said the event was in support of the renewed call to curb fake news, character assassination, disinformation, and cyber bullying witnessed in the country stressing that the role of “fake news,” misinformation, and propaganda in spreading inaccurate information online has come to prominence ahead of 2021 governorship election.

Speaking on the event in view, Dr. Chuma maintained that the summit will convene a discourse on the menace of fake news, propaganda, misinformation, character assassination and cyber bullying aimed to address such practice with strategic reorientation and campaign against such acts especially as the Anambra gubernatorial election draws closer.

He regretted that incessant fake news in the Nigeria media space had victimized innocent individuals overtime urging body of image makers and loyalists of political gladiators to bring utmost responsibility in doing their job. He further admonished news consumers and influencers to double-check facts and news sources as it is only a fraction of what is on the internet is true.

” while we believe social engineering would go a long way in appealing to the thinking faculties of everyone with mobile device, wishing to put one information or the other to double check facts to make sure that someone is not being wrongly made a victim somewhere because what disinformation does sometimes is to create innocent victims. “

On the upcoming election, he reminded that “electoral contests must not be won by smearing the image of promising opponents noting that the media space is wide enough to accommodate each candidate’s plans to change the fortune of the state.

Odogwublog.com reports that the upcoming  Anambra Independent Media Summit 2021, themed: “The Role of Social Media in Anambra 2021 Election,” Will hold on April 5th featuring speakers and panelists like Prof Alex – Amata, Dr. James Abah, Amb Rama’s Okoye, among others.
