Aguleri, Umuoba Anam Crisis: Anambra Govt, Police Push for Peace
By Emezina Patricia
The Anambra State Government and security agencies have intensified efforts to restore peace in Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities following recent incidents that disrupted the security and socio-economic activities of residents.
The Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, led government officials, security chiefs and other stakeholders on an assessment visit to the affected areas on September 2.
The visit provided the delegation an opportunity to obtain first-hand information on the security situation, inspect affected locations and assess the impact of the crisis on residents, businesses and community infrastructure.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the assessment formed part of measures being taken to stabilize the communities and prevent further escalation.
The Police Command said the delegation also confirmed the fatal injury sustained by a victim and examined the extent of property damage arising from the crisis.
CP Oji Ama urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of worsening the situation, while encouraging community leaders and residents to provide credible information to security agencies.
He stressed the need for all parties to pursue lawful means of resolving grievances, noting that cooperation between residents, community leaders and security agencies remained important to restoring normalcy.
The Deputy Governor similarly appealed to traditional rulers, town unions, youth organisations and other community stakeholders to support government and security agencies in rebuilding confidence and promoting peaceful coexistence.
Dr Ibezim maintained that security remained a shared responsibility, urging stakeholders to work collectively towards creating conditions for the return of normal social and economic activities.
The Police Command assured residents that security measures were being strengthened in the affected communities, while efforts continued through dialogue, community engagement and other lawful channels to address issues contributing to the crisis.
