The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, has urged religious leaders in the state to use their platforms to promote environmental awareness, proper waste management and compliance with environmental laws.

Aguiyi made the call on Sept. 18, when he received the Enugwu-Agidi Indigenous Gospel Ministers Association, led by Pastor Emmanuel Jideobi, on a courtesy visit to the ministry.

He said government’s efforts to improve environmental standards would yield lasting results only when citizens, communities and relevant institutions took ownership of environmental responsibility.

The commissioner urged religious leaders to intensify public sensitisation through sermons and community engagements, particularly on cleanliness, responsible waste disposal and compliance with environmental regulations.

According to him, churches and other faith based organisations wield significant influence in their communities and can help change attitudes and behaviour towards environmental protection.

The delegation congratulated Aguiyi on his appointment, describing him as the first commissioner from Enugwu-Agidi.

The members said the community had continued to pray for its progress despite challenges in recent years and expressed appreciation for what they described as positive developments in the town.

The ministers also offered prayers for wisdom, strength and guidance for the commissioner and assured him of their support. They presented him with a Bible.

Also speaking, Mr Obu Udeozo, a writer and member of the delegation, said he had a longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility.

Udeozo commended Aguiyi’s efforts to improve environmental standards in the state and presented some of his literary works to the commissioner.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Chinyere Nwabachili, was also present during the visit.
