ACCE elects Prof. Bashir as it’s new president

Professor Abdullahi Bashir Saleh of Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, Adamawa State has been voted 6th President of the African Council for Education (ACCE), Nigerian Chapter.

Bashir, a Professor of Media and Information Studies emerged President today at the 23rd International Conference and Annual General Meeting of the body held at the Nnamndi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, between 24-27, 2023.

He has been teaching information and Communications courses at MAU, Yola since 2000, and has published researches in over thirty national and foreign journals and books. He was the Head, Department of Information Management Technology and currently the Deputy Director Center for Distance Learning, MAU, Yola. His interests are digital journalism, climate change communication, and conflict communication. Bashir earned a PhD in 2012 from the University of Uyo, Nigeria.

He takes over from Professor Ekeanyanwu Nnamdi who took the reins in 2017 and served in two terms of two years each.

Other past Presidents of the Council include: late Professor Ikechukwu Nwosu (2000-2005), Professor Ebenezer Oludayo Soola (2005-2009), Professor Desmond Ephraim Wilson (2009-2012), Professor Danjuma (2012-2017).

In an unselfish move that drew deafening commendation from conferees and conference delegates, Professor Ezekiel S. Asemah will serve as Vice President. This means the council and delegates had to ratify the nominees.

Professor Danjuma Gambo of the University of Maiduguri and Professor Peter Esuh , Dean Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Uyo took turns to extol the stirling virtues of Professor Asemah and noted that by his selflessness, he had demonstrated clearly that his love for the Council overrides any personal interests.

Down-to-earth, unassuming and self-effacing, Professor Asemah is a Professor of Public Relations and Advertising and was in 2019 elected Dean of the College of Management and Social Sciences, Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State. He is the immediate past National Secretary of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Benin.

Professor Asemah, a leading reference in Google Scholar earned a PhD in 2015 from the University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria. In September, 2021, he presented the Third Inaugural Lecture of Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa Edo State, Nigeria

Asemah has well over 125 Journals Articles, 11 Edited books / Conference Proceedings, 24 Books and 48 Chapter Contributions to his name.

Other members of the Executive Committee are: Dr. Ibituru Pepple (Secretary), Dr. Santas Tsegyu, Dep. Secretary, Dr Comfort Okwella (National Treasurer), Dr Obiorah Edogor (Dir. Public Affairs).

They were immediately sworn into office by the National legal adviser of ACCE Nigeria, Dr Nsikan Senam, following affirmation of allegiance and affirmation of office.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Bashir thanked the council for the confidence reposed in him and his team. He said they had accepted the enormous task thrust on them and promised to considate and improve upon the success of the past administrations.

Professor Charles Obot, FACCE, Head, Department of Film and Multimedia Studies, University of Uyo served as Electoral Chairman, with Dr Njideka Ezeonyejiaku, SACCE, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, as Secretary.
