A Life of Discipline and Devotion Remembered: Final Rites for Chief Samuel Agunwa Odogwu Draw Dignitaries and Tributes
The final burial rites of Late Chief Samuel Agunwa Odogwu—fondly known as Akunnia n’Amanuke*—were held on *Friday, 5th September 2025*, in Amanuke, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The solemn yet dignified ceremony marked the end of a life defined by discipline, service, and unwavering faith.
The funeral events commenced with an Evening of Songs and Christian Wake Keep at his compound in *
Umudiogo Village, Amagu, near Central School Amanuke. The burial service7 was held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, near Afor Market, followed by interment at his family compound. Guests were later entertained at the Central School field, where tributes continued to pour in.
Chief Odogwu passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, and a host of well-wishers. He was the father of Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The funeral drew a distinguished crowd from across the state and beyond, including government officials, political aspirants, professionals, and community leaders. Among the dignitaries present were Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, former governorship candidate; Mr. Obi, 2023 presidential aspirant; and Chief Dr. Ndubuisi Nwaobu (Obuka Awka), a deputy governorship aspirant for the 2025 election
Also in attendance were representatives and heads of notable organizations such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rotary Club of Nigeria, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Nigeria Labour Congress, and Federal Polytechnic Oko Alumni Association, all of which Dr. Odogwu actively participates in.
Speaking to the press, *Mr. Ekwunife Oranye described the late Chief as “an excellent personality worthy of emulation and a rare disciplinarian.”
“He was a good adviser. If you followed his counsel, you would surely become someone meaningful in life,” he said.
Revd. Christian Okechukwu Obijiofor
Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, noted that despite battling health challenges, Chief Odogwu remained mentally and spiritually committed to the church. > “He was a man who once fought for the church. His heart was always with God,” the priest remarked.
Revd. Emmanuel Chukwuma Enemuo, a priest serving in Abakaliki Diocese and a native of Amanuke, described the late Chief as his brother.
“Even at his age, we miss him deeply. He never liked to miss church services and contributed immensely to the growth of Holy Trinity Church,” he said.
Mrs. Charity, a niece to the deceased, referred to him as a “big father” and recalled his days as a headmaster.
“Before joining the civil service, he encouraged us to pursue education. His teachings helped me become a headmistress today,” she shared.
In an emotional tribute, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, the first son of the late Chief, described his father as a disciplinarian par excellence.
“He gave birth to nine of us. Though two have passed on, seven of us are successful in our various fields. If not for his strict discipline, we might have gone astray,” he said.
He added:
“My father was a lover of Christ. He had near-death experiences, but his faith always brought him back. He lived to celebrate his 47th wedding anniversary with his wife before finally passing. My prayer is that the good aspects of his teachings will continue to manifest among us.”
Mr. Valentine Ozigbo*, in his remarks, recalled attending Chief Odogwu’s 47th wedding anniversary.
“I was here last year to celebrate him, and today I’m here to mourn with my friend, Dr. Odogwu. This is a reminder that life is fleeting. What matters is the legacy we leave behind,” he said.
Mrs. Odogwu Obialunamma Esther (Angel Odogwu), daughter-in-law to the late Chief, described him as a kind and peaceful man.
“He took me as his own daughter and affectionately named me ‘Otuugo’ when I joined the family. I will miss him dearly,” she said.
The funeral of Chief Samuel Agunwa Odogwu was not just a farewell, it was a celebration of a life well lived. It brought together a mosaic of dignitaries, family, friends, and admirers, all united in honouring a man whose legacy of discipline, faith, and community impact will continue to echo through generations.
