Diocese on the Niger Laity President ‘Ukachukwu ‘ Challenges Anglicans To Active Service, Fear of God

The President of the Council of Laity, Diocese on the Niger, Sir Chris Ukachukwu has called on Anglicans to stop being bench warmers and step up to build the Church in the fear of God.
Sir Ukachukwu made the charge on Saturday September 12, 2026 at St Michael’s and All Angels’ Anglican Church, SMAAAC, Nkpor, Idemili North LGA, Anambra State, during the Congress of the House of Laity themed ‘The Fear of God is the Beginning of Wisdom Proverbs 9:10’.
Speaking to the delegates, Ukachukwu said that true wisdom starts with reverence for God, obedience to His Word, and faithful service.
“The responsibility of building the Church should not be left to the clergy alone.
The laity have important roles to play: supporting our clergy, advancing evangelism, caring for members, encouraging our youths, and giving our time, talents, and resources to the work of God.
The Laity President challenged every member to examine their contribution and commit to A Five-Point Charge to the Laity namely: I will be present, I will participate, I will serve , I will support the unity of the Church, I will use my gifts for God’s work.
He urged societies, guilds, and fellowships to send representatives who will not just “occupy positions” but will attend meetings, communicate decisions, and ensure programs are implemented at the Diocesan and Archdeaconry levels.
Sir Ukachukwu also warned against rivalry and division in church organizations. “Leadership positions are opportunities for service, not personal recognition,” he said. “The fear of God must guide us with humility, integrity, fairness and accountability.”
Sir Ukachukwu further urged the laity to strengthen evangelism, support church leadership, encourage children and youths, promote peace, and turn council decisions into practical results
Moreover, the Chaplain of the Diocese on the Niger House of Laity, Ven. Dr Okechukwu Ukpeke, described the fear of God as the foundation of righteous living and a strong force against impunity in both society and the Church. He called for total repentance and renewed loyalty to God.
Contributing on the theme of the Congress, the host Priest, Ven. Frank Obi, stressed that “God is the Alpha and Omega; the Author and Finisher of our Faith,” and pledged continued support for the House of Laity.
Highlights of the Congress include a political sensitization talk by Rev Canon Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Aniakor, Diocesan Director, DCPA, a health talk by Physiotherapist Charles Ehirim, an announcement that the Diocese has set up a Committee on Gender Based Violence headed by Rev Canon Johnson Iwuamaeze and Chain prayers, praise sessions, and a fundraising to support God’s work.
