UNIZIK Alumni Association Unveils Scholarship Scheme to Empower Indigent Students

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA) has officially unveiled its scholarship scheme in Awka, Anambra State, under the theme “Empowering Dreams, Building the Future.”

The event, held on June 13, 2025, at the university campus, attracted several dignitaries who are also members of the association. Among them were Chief Ndubuisi Nwaobu (Obuka Awka), who chaired the occasion; Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Government, who served as the keynote speaker; and Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who was the chief host.

One of the major highlights of the event was a series of speeches and financial donations from various alumni members, all aimed at supporting underprivileged students.

In his opening remarks, Chief Dr. Ndubuisi Nwobu emphasized that the scholarship scheme was designed to be an ongoing initiative, reflecting NAUAA’s commitment to giving back to its alma mater. He encouraged members to actively participate to ensure the association achieves its goal.

The Global President of NAU Alumni, Dr. Ikechukwu Umeh, echoed this sentiment in his welcome address, stating that beyond financial aid, the association seeks to plant seeds of hope:
“Today, we gather not only to provide financial assistance but to sow seeds of hope, resilience, and opportunity under the banner of our theme, ‘Empowering Dreams, Building the Future.’ We come together to reaffirm the shared truth that education is not just a pathway to personal success but the cornerstone of national progress.”

Dr. Umeh further noted that the foundation laid for alumni at the institution has empowered them in their various endeavors, making it essential for them to extend a helping hand to the next generation of students—fondly referred to as ZIKITs.

Keynote speaker Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, who described the event as a “homecoming,” emphasized that the scholarship initiative is more than just financial aid—it’s an investment in future dreams:
“To be back on this soil, where the seeds of my future were planted, and to witness the birth of a legacy through the UNIZIK Alumni Scholarship Scheme, is a privilege that resonates deeply with me. We’re not just unveiling scholarships—we are launching dreams.”

Reflecting on his personal journey, Mr. Ezeajughi shared that the knowledge he gained at UNIZIK enabled him to work as a microbiologist in esteemed institutions in the United Kingdom, including Public Health England. He credited the university for laying the foundation that helped him thrive professionally.

Dr. Ezeajughi further underscored the importance of the scholarship scheme, stating that it has the potential to inspire students to pursue their dreams and become great leaders in various capacities. He applauded the organizers and contributors for making the initiative a reality.

The unveiling event was marked by generous financial donations from alumni and supporters, all aimed at empowering indigent students.

This innovative scholarship program by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association stands as a testament to the association’s dedication to fostering educational excellence and uplifting students in need.
