30 Communities Submerged By Flood 6 Die In Anambra As Residents Lament.

There was wailing in some communities in Anambra State on Friday when flood wreaked havoc on the area, killing six persons and leaving several houses submerged in water.

The communities, in four local councils of Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayamelum and Ogbaru, have been enduring flooding since 2012.

But this year’s flood, according to the people in the areas, appeared to be the worst because apart from the death tolls, crops and properties worth billions of naira have either been submerged or destroyed by the rampaging flood which is not showing any sign of receding soon.

Rowlandgate Odogwublog.com visited the areas he saw people men and women, young and old wearing sad look as they flocked to any available space that can hold them till tomorrow.

Multi million naira apartments were seen submerged in the flood water while their owners look helplessly.

Mr. Michael Okafor-Nwofia, a prominent person in the area whose house was submerged, appealed to the federal government to dredge the river Niger in order to stop the recurring flooding in the area.

According to him, the yearly flooding, if left unchecked, will sooner than later, sack all his people from their ancestral homes as most people do not 30 Communities Submerged By Flood 6 Die In Anambra As Residents Lament. the financial muscle to keep rebuilding their houses in this current harsh economic conditions of Nigeria.

Federal government equally needs to build dams same way it is done in some northern states of the country to help store the water each time it comes to safeguard the socioeconomic development of my people,” he pleaded.

He regretted that his people have been passing through hardship after every flooding as all their means of livelihood have been destroyed.

Also, the member representing Anambra West Constituency in Anambra state House of Assembly, Honourable Patrick Obalim-Udoba, called on the federal government to expedite action on dredging the River Niger to alleviate the suffering of his people.

The lawmaker said that the Anambra state House of Assembly is coming with Riverine Areas Development Commission Bill to help cushion the effects of flooding on the coastal communities of Anambra state.
