2026 Fathers’ Day: Anambra Commissioner Calls for Collective Action Against Domestic Violence
Lawrence Nwimo, Awka
The Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, has called for collective action from families, communities, and stakeholders to curb the rising cases of domestic violence in the state.
Speaking in Awka during the 2026 International Fathers’ Day celebration, Mrs Onyekesi charged fathers to live up to their responsibilities as the pillars and moral compass of their homes.
She expressed concern that many fathers have abandoned their role of providing emotional, spiritual, and financial support, a development she linked to poor upbringing and behavioral issues among children.
“Fathers must see their position as a call to greater responsibility. It goes beyond provision. Fathers are expected to stay, pray, counsel, and guide their families. When fathers are absent in these duties, children suffer and society bears the cost,” she said.
The Commissioner also regretted the increasing incidence of domestic violence, noting that it is undermining the sanctity of marriage and threatening the wellbeing of women and children.
She disclosed that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare will soon convene a stakeholders’ engagement to develop practical strategies for reducing violence in homes across Anambra.
Mrs Onyekesi urged residents to break the culture of silence by reporting cases of domestic violence, child abuse, and child labour to the Ministry for prompt intervention.
“We have zero tolerance for violence against vulnerable persons. The public must speak out. Report any abuse you see so we can take necessary action,” she added.
